The old saying is, "Is the cup half-full or half empty?" Most likely answer has always been, "It depends on whether you're doing the pouring or the drinking". For Sammy it didn't depend on anything. It was always pouring. Always. On him. Always.

When Sammy was born his father thought there was something wrong with him. His mom, being a mom, didn't. The doctor then pointed out that the baby had an extra finger on each hand. Said it was no big deal and it wouldn't affect the baby's life. Hah!

"The boy's a freak!", his father said.

"He's our son", his mom replied.

"Yea, well, yea".

Webby, as his childhood friends called him, was really affected by the extra fingers. He couldn't see any advantage to them. Later, in his teen years, he became a better guitarist because of them but that was later. By that time he was half crazy and didn't care.

Playing Little League was a chore for Sammy. Not only was he not talented, he was taunted. He also had to keep two fingers on the outside of the glove instead of one. No one actually knew that but Sammy but that was enough. The other coaches kept complaining that Sammy had an unfair advantage. At the League meeting they finally were shut up when Sammy's couch mentioned that Sammy had never gotten a hit and only played because he had to.

"Hey, Coach, I hit the ball!", Sammy exclaimed.

"Foul tips don't count, Sammy".

In the seventh grade he was old enough to go to the school dances. Problem was trying to hold the girl's hand. He always had a finger left over. He never knew what to do with it and it sort of just waved around.

"No, Sammy. I like you but I always look dumb with that extra finger waving around", some sweet thing would tell him.

When he and his first girlfriend exchanged rings she asked him how he knew which finger was his ring finger. Sammy threw her ring into the creek. She broke up with him in a huff. Told him he was too sensitive. He asked her how sensitive she'd be if she had an extra breast. That gave her pause.

When he was courting his wife she told everyone how courteous Sammy was. He never tried to make a pass at her. He didn't even try to hold her hand. She didn't know that Sammy did that on purpose. He loved this woman and wanted her to marry him. What she didn't know now wouldn't matter after they married. There was a good reason for her not knowing.

She was blind.
