Davey and the Raft
Davey had been a little odd ever since the day the Coast Guard rescued him. He’d been floating on his raft for three days with no water and no cover. When the Coasties got to him he started to fight them. They finally had to cold-cock him to rescue him. It didn’t sound good in the papers but , as the Captain said, “It was that or let him die. Maybe we made the wrong choice but I was the one on the scene”. Davey was in his raft because his boat sank. Seems he checked and double-checked everything except the drain plug. It wasn’t in. After a while, Davey noticed he was getting lower and lower to the water. By that time it was too late. He tried bailing water but it was coming in faster then it was going out. The boat went down. What upset Davey the most was that he’d just paid it off and had dropped his insurance to save money. Davey managed to get the raft inflated and into the water just in time. What he didn’t do was make sure he had drinking water. He figured the Coast Guard would find him quick enough. He was wrong. He was almost dead wrong.
“Hey, who hit me?”, he asked. “That’s classified”, the Captain told him. The paper wanted to interview him. The networks all wanted him on tv. He asked how much and they told him that they don’t pay for interviews. Davey couldn’t see telling them for free so they could make money on ads using his story. That didn’t add up to Davey. He finally sold his story to one of the rag sheets after changing the Coast Guard into aliens, the cutter into a flying saucer and getting a fake scar put on his newly shaven head. |
