The Stono River Bridge is a drawbridge. It swing out instead of up and down, though. It's been known to swing out and not swing back in. The bridge operator then comes out of his little shack and looks at the bridge. Then he scratches his head. If that doesn't work he calls the bridge repair guy.

The repair guy gets there eventually after fighting through the traffic. He gets out and consults the bridge operator.

"What happened, Clem?"

"She done swung out but didn't swing on back."

Then the repair guy and the operator scratch their heads. That has never been known to work. Honking your horn at them doesn't work either. Gestures and obscenities also fail. What does work is for the repair guy to go out and see what the problem is.

After looking around for a while he comes back and tells Clem, "The chain's broke again. Gonna have to put a couple of new links in there."

"Got 'em with you, I hope."

"Well, no. What if it were somethin' else. Wouldn't need no new links then. Right?" May be that there's a couple of missing links talking.

The repair guy fights back through the traffic to the shop, gets a couple of links and arrives back at the bridge. He takes the links out and comes back.

Clem asks, "She fixed."

"No, done brought one link too few."

Yep, a missing link.
