Silly Seasons
Americans just love their silly seasons. So much so that they always have one. Every day is a silly season. Remember the Y2K computer crash? The geeks told everyone that all computers would fail at midnight, January 1, 2000. Computers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between 1900 and 2000. Computers would stop running; electric would fail; telephones would no longer work. Worse, cable tv wouldn’t work. That caused a lot of anxiety. The NFL playoffs and the bowl games not on? Oh, man! Came the stroke of midnight and nothing happened. Nothing ever did happen. America felt like it had been the victim of a geek joke. Mobs formed to storm the homes of geeks. They took all the computers the geeks had and burned them on the front lawn. It was horrifying. Some of the geeks never did recover. They now sit and write stuff on paper using a pencil. There’s always a silly season with dolls, cubes, bad art and the all-time winner.....The Pet Rock. Americans went crazy for Pet Rocks. They didn’t do much, mostly just sat there. As time went on, the silliness passed and people quietly got rid of their Pet Rocks. Except for Wade Buffer, of Wichita Corners, North Dakota. He got rid of his by throwing it through the window of the store where he bought it. At his trial, he tried to claim he was defrauded. The judge told him that he wasn’t defrauded, he was silly. Now we have another silly season going on. First there’s Paris Hilton and certain performances. Then there’s Brittany Spears and does she have activities? She’s the Virgin Queen who performs almost undressed. She Frenches Madonna. She gets married for something to do for a weekend. Americans are interested in her. That’s as silly as it gets. |
