Don't Weep For Me

Boo-Boo Truker stood staring at the oncoming waves. There was no doubt these would be the biggest he'd ever rode. He was ecstatic at the prospect. This would be the thrill of a lifetime. The waves were so high because of the approaching hurricane. Boo-Boo's lifetime may not be too long.

Boo-Boo, who couldn't afford to go to California, had been waiting all his life for this moment. All nineteen years of it. He told his parents, who wanted to commit him, that he wasn't going to evacuate.

"This is my big chance. Who knows when I might get another one?", he told his parents.

"Son, there will always be another hurricane. One where you're a little more mature", his dad told him in hopes of talking Boo-Boo out of this.

"Oh, yea. like when I'm too old to ride. Like when I'm 25", Boo-Boo replied.

Even Boo-Boo's friend were leaving.

"Dude, surfing is surfing. Dead is dead. Get it, dude?"

Boo-Boo wouldn't hear of it. He was going for it no matter what. His girlfriend tried tears and that didn't work.

"Don't weep for me", Boo-Boo told her. "A man has to do what a man has to do".

"Yea, but if you get killed I won't have a date next weekend. I'll really be crying then", she told him.

"I'm nothing special", Boo- Boo said to try to calm her.

"No, you're not. You are dependable and, to be honest, not too grabby".

It was time. Boo-Boo started to paddle out to meet the waves. Ready to ride! Going for it all! Going for the big one! Going nowhere!! What's this? Boo-Boo couldn't get out to sea. The waves and the riptide kept pushing him back. Oh, no, I'm headed south towards the beach.

He hit the beach, flipped off his board, smacked his head, went out, and woke up to find that the hurricane had passed by. The waves were their normal selves. Dinky. Not I was trying to get to, he thought.

Only one escape from that. Have to hitch-hike to California. No one would find him in that crowd.
