Bill's Small Head Billy's problem was that his head was too small for his body. Always was. His Pa used to remark on it. "Billy, yourn head be too danged little. Maybe iffen you was to go down to , say, hunner' and twenny pounds you'd look right. You jus' looks funny this a way." "Pa, I only weighs a hunner' an' twenny now. It's all I kin do to keep from blowin' away in the wind as is." Billy was tired of being made fun of by the other cowboys. "Hey, Billy, ya forgot to put yer haid on today." He was tired of being laughed at by the hookers at the Long Branch. He take out his two dollars and they'd just laugh. Wouldn't say anything, just laugh. Billy would get riled and go to the Silver Dollar. There, as long as he had fifty cents, his head didn't matter. Yes, they laughed but still... His biggest problem was his hat. It was too big. Billy was not going to wear a kid's hat. His hat would come way down over his eyes. He couldn't see where he was going most of the time. Being a cowboy, that was a problem. "Billy, want to drive them there cattle this a way?", his foreman would yell out to him. Billy thought he was driving them this a way. Turns out he was driving them that a way. One more embarrassment. He tried cutting eye holes in the hat. He then looked like a stupid version of the Lone Ranger. The real Lone Ranger told him to stop it or he'd get a silver bullet where it hurts. He got caught by a band of Apaches once. They were going to torture him and then scalp him. Billy was so depressed he wanted to be tortured. That took all the fun out of it for the Apaches. They decided to just scalp him and let him go. He was starting to depress them "White eye got no scalp. Me got um more hair on chest than he got on head. Scalp look stupid on lodge totem. Who's idea was it to capture this guy?" Well, let just say no one spoke up. They were all too embarrassed. Billy tried growing his hair real long and combing it up and using glue to keep it there. He thought that would keep his hat out of his face. As the glue was drying he leaned against the porch post. The other cowboys had to shave his head to get him loose. Then his hat wouldn't stay on at all. He was known far and wide as "Billy the Lid". |
