The FBI's On the Job When the Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the FBI heard about the bank robbery he got excited. Bank robberies were way down with all the use of plastic. He immediately dispatched 97 agents to the scene. When the Agent-in-Charge of the Kansas City office of the FBI heard about the bank robbery he got excited. He immediately dispatched 58 agents to the scene. Then he heard the Chicago boys were already there. He called the Chicago office. “Boyce? This is Randolph. Back off, man. It’s our jurisdiction”. “Nonsense, Boyce. We’re the closest office. It’s ours”. “How do you figure that? I measured it. We’re three and a quarter inches from Twobit, Iowa. You’re almost three and three-quarter’s. It’s my case”. “On my SuperSupreme map we’re only one and one-half inches away. It’s our case”. “Well, shoot. I’m not giving up this easy. I’m calling the Director. We went to school together”, Boyce told Randolph. “Oh. Umm, okay, it’s your case. Sorry about the mix-up”. “Oh, don’t worry about it”. When the agents from the Kansas City office rolled into Twobit and pulled up in front of the Twobit National Bank, they stepped out in confidence. Then they were thrown to the street by the Chicago SWAT team, handcuffed and thrown in a paddy wagon. “Well, I suppose that solves the jurisdictional problem”, said Special Agent-in-Charge Cooper “Coop” Henratty. He led his 97 agents into the Twobit bank. There he met the local, part-time cop, Hugh Williams. “You the FBI? Well, it was Clyde Taler done it”, Hugh told Henratty. “We’ll decide who did it”, Henratty replied. “Well, Taler done it. Heck, the teller recognized him. He used one of his own deposit slips for the note. He done it, alright”. “We’ll need to question all the employees of the bank”, Henratty decided. For a week the FBI questioned and requestioned the employees. No one could get into the bank. The customers started using the Utumwa bank. The Twobit bank was about out of business. The President of the bank told Henratty that it was only a two-hundred dollar robbery. He, the President, would give the bank the two hundred dollars. The FBI promptly arrested him for bribery. They were on a roll. Now they needed to find this Taler guy. They set up roadblocks. They put out a dragnet for him. They made a sketch of him and got it on tv. Taler was sitting in his living room drinking beer when he saw the sketch. He didn’t pay any attention until they said his name. Boy, he thought, what a lousy sketch. Well, they got me, he concluded. May as well turn myself in. Taler went down to the bank. The agent at the door refused to let him in. Taler told him who he was. The agent stared at Taler a while. “No, you don’t look anything like the sketch. Get away from here”. |
