Who's Watching Who?
The two frogs were sitting on a pad snatching flies, mosquitoes and dragonflies with their tongues. They each had one eye on the target and one eye looking for an alligator. They didn't want to become targets. The alligator was watching the frogs. He was judging the distance and the angle of attack. If he did this right he could get them both with one swallow. He wouldn't get a second chance. He had never done it yet but there was always a first time. How smart could a frog be? He didn't wonder how smart an alligator was. Le Brea, the poacher, was watching the alligator watching the frogs. He, too, was planning his attack. He needed to snare the gators jaws and wrestle him a bit. Can't damage the hide. A virgin hide was a lot more valuable than a damaged one. otherwise, Le Brea would just shoot the gator. Le Brea's hide had been damaged a few times doing this. Still, it was his career. Tommy Hales, a career game warden, was watching Le Brea watching the alligator. Hales had that stinking poacher this time. Maybe this would get his boss off his butt. The boss was acting like Hales wasn't doing his job. Hales thought that was great coming from man who hadn't been in the swamps for years. It never occurred to Hales that, perhaps, he had been in the swamps for too many years. Hales' boss, Grady, was watching Hales watching Le Brea. If Hales doesn't catch Le Brea, that does it. Hales was gone.
Roth was sneaking up on the frogs. He had his frog sticker ready. He didn't
know about the alligator or the poacher or the warden or his boss. He only knew
about the two frogs. Be quick and he'd have them. Umm, delicious.
One of the frogs belched. That scared the second frog, who jumped into the water. The other frog, seeing this, leaped in the air. The alligator, seeing breakfast getting away, made a leap. Not a real leap but an alligator leap. Le Brea, seeing the gator do the leap swung his loop. Hales, seeing the loop going, started to go to Le Brea. His boss just watched. Roth, still not aware of the alligator, but aware of the frogs jumping around, threw his prong, hitting the alligator on the snout. The second frog, surfacing, saw the alligator leap and the prong hit him. He started laughing. The first frog also stared laughing. He laughed until the gator chomped him. Le Brea, seeing his loop miss, started swearing. Hales took a step toward Le Brea to arrest him. He took one step. His foot was caught in a root and he went down hard. Grady, seeing Hales disappear, decided to arrest Hales and Le Brea. This would look good on his record. He was going to yell out for everyone to stand where they were. What he actually yelled out was, "Every-" To Hales it sounded like a ball being hit. To Le Brea, it sounded like trouble. He whirled around and took off into the swamp. To the alligator it sounded like a poacher. He took a dive with the first frog. Roth, hearing all this, tossed his spare prong away and ran off. Le Brea ran into the prong. Now he really started swearing. Hales, freeing his foot, heard the swearing and caught Le Brea. Grady didn't hear anything. |
