One Big Rooster

When I first saw the rooster I thought it was a big, leafy bush. Then it moved. Scared the daylights out of me. Moving bushes always do. It's a "Day of the Triffods" problem I have.

I took a second look, not really believing in Triffods, and saw that it was something tied to a stake. It looked like a chicken. It turned out to be a rooster. Why would anyone tie a rooster to a stake? Why would anyone have to?

Turns out the owner's daughter, my boss, owns the rooster. She says she keeps it tied to the stake because he bothers her chickens.

"He just won't leave them alone."

Now, that's a puzzle. I thought roosters were supposed to bother the chickens. That's how you get more chickens. Unless she's into cloning. I doubted that.

"Uh, I don't want to get too personal here but isn't that his job?"

"Yes, it is. But he has no self-control. None. Plus, he's been after the cats too."

Oh, that's a different story altogether. Hate to think what the kittens around there look like.

"The neighbors have done some complaining. The police stopped by a couple of times. That was okay since they didn't believe the complaints. The rooster is pretty smart. While the cops are there he behaves".

What I saw was a rooster trying to untie his leash. If he had an opposable thumb he'd have done it. If he had any thumb he might have made it. So I thought. I sneaked up and looked at him. He wasn't tied with rope. He was tied with wire. Guess he had cut through the regular ropes.

As I stood there looking at him he started looking at me. The saying, "Be careful when you look into the abyss, it may be looking back", immediately came to mind. That rooster made me nervous. It was pretty big. Biggest rooster I've ever seen.

The chickens were clucking around him, out of range, which drove the rooster nuts. He was jumping around like crazy. The cats were teasing him to boot. I didn't notice any dogs around.

"Oh, he hates dogs. Kills them on sight."

Kills them on sight? What kind of rooster is this? Where did she get one like that? Why did she get one like that?

"I like him because he's so cute."

Yea. Cute. I'd bet she'd like to get rid of him. Can't because he'd be able to defend himself. If she gave him away he'd make his way back and do something terrible to her. That's what I think.
