The Bank Loan Todd had recently been transferred to Chicago to be the regional manager. It was a nice promotion with a nice raise. He and his wife, Sherry, sold their house for a very nice profit. They put it in the bank until they found the home they wanted in Chicago. They went to their branch office there to apply for a mortgage. What with a sizable down payment, a bigger income and great credit they didn’t think they’d have any trouble getting a loan. They were wrong as wrong can be. After filling out the application, the loan manager sat down with them to go over the application. He read it a couple of times. He also had their credit report which he got while they were filling out the application. He read it a couple of times too. “Mr. Sanger, I’m afraid you don’t qualify for a mortgage here. I’d suggest one of the lesser companies that specialize in applicants such as yourself”, he told Todd. “What! What are you talking about? I have great credit, a big down payment and a bigger income!”, Todd said in shock. “Not according to this report. This report says you defaulted on your home loan in Camden”, the officer told him. “Camden! I’ve never lived in Camden!”, Todd exclaimed. “Sir, control yourself, please. According to this report you lived in Camden until ten years ago. I see you have a new wife, although that’s none of my business, I suppose”. “What! Sherry and I have been married for twenty-three years! I never lived in Camden! I never heard of the place!”, Todd said. “Sir, please. This report says otherwise”. “Then it’s wrong!”. “Please, sir, control yourself. We do have a security guard. The report id wrong? That’s impossible”. “Todd, what’s with this other wife of yours?”, Sherry asked.
“That report says there is, or was”, Sherry continued. “People, people. It doesn’t matter. I don’t know that being a polygamist disqualifies you. Defaulting on a loan does, though”. “So, you and this second wife couldn’t cut it and now I’m out a home in Chicago. Well, so are you. You’re way out, you-” “Oh, wait. Excuse me, I have someone else’s report here. This is so embarrassing”, the loam manager said. “Don’t worry about it. If it weren’t for you, I’d still be living in a fools paradise with this two-timing-” “It wasn’t me!”, Todd yelled. “Oh, right. I guess that report is wrong. Yea, right”, Sherry told Todd. |
